Chinchilla Habitat

If you’re planning to purchase chinchillas, you should be sure that you create the right habitat for your pets. It’s important that, before you do go out and purchase one of your own chinchillas as a pet, you learn more details about what they like and dislike. Invest some time researching a chinchilla’s habitat in the wild. This will help to set-up a home for your pet where they’ll be comfortable living.

A good number of domestic chinchillas’ forefathers resided within the Andes Mountain area of Chile and South America. If in the rough outdoors these critters tend to create their homes in burrows on rocky crevices around the sides of mountains. Which means it is important that you produce this sort of home for them.

When you do bring a chinchilla into your home, just remember to get a proper house (cage) in which it should be kept. It is very important that you decide on a cage with a good amount of height to it, furnishing them with plenty of space to climb around and play when in the cage.

You may think that its possible to save money by purchasing a good sized bird cage, that would normally house a parrot, is a good idea. It just is not because there will not plenty of living space allowing this wonderful pet the ability to maneuver and jump inside of. Although it is difficult to think, these types of pets are capable at jumping as much as 1.5 meters straight into mid-air. Therefore, you are generally far better off spending a bit more on a caged surrounding made to develop an ideal habitat for your chinchilla.

Consider integrating some types of toys except for those composed of plastic material to keep them amused. You will need to keep in mind that chinchillas like to gnaw stuff and typically the plastic-type toys may contain chemicals that may turn out to be toxic and hazardous to their health. Alternatively there are numerous other objects like wooden toys (all-natural ones are usually better) and also paper tubes should be well suited for your chinchilla play around with. And don’t forget, have a look at supplying chew sticks for them.

In terms of just what ones own pet chinchilla needs to eat, the process of understanding additional information about how this animal lives in the wild will let you to make the decision what should be included in their diet regime. When out in their wild habitat most chinchillas are likely to ingest various plants, seeds and insects. For that reason if you want your pet to remain in good health and not have potential digestive tract infections then a hay based diet should be used. Also, make certain you supply them with plenty of water each day.

Another thing you have to think about when creating an ideal chinchilla habitat for one’s pet is to bear in mind that these types of pets tend to be most active at night. So make sure that you house them in a location that they cannot disturb you or other members of your family while trying to sleep.

Tips For Buying a Bird Breeding Cage

If you are going to breed birds, it could be both a challenge and a very interesting endeavour. It will be a lot smoother for you, if you get a good bird breeding cage. To make your choice easier here are some tips.

It is much more difficult to breed birds than mammals because it needs a lot of care and work. Consider the idea of breeding cockatiels, canaries, or other birds carefully having this in mind. After all the pros and cons for choosing bird breeding and if you have made the decision to start, you will have to buy a breeding cage. It is larger than general cages and there is a pull-out divider in the center. After your birds get used to live together, you can convert the split cage into a single large cage.

Depending on what kind of bird you are going to breed, you should choose the size of breeder cage. For example, cockatoos require bigger room than tiny parrotlets. You have to be sure that there is enough space for your birds and that they will not get their heads trapped in the mesh. A breeding cage for a pair of cockatiels has to be wide and high at least eighteen inches and forty-eight inches long.

If you have a bird family also there has to be a nest box in the breeding cage, twelve inch by twelve inch in size,in order both parents and all the babies to fit properly. It is possible if there is not enough space that parents could pluck their babies. Maybe you should cut a space in which to hang the nest box,but be careful with wire-cutting. If you are not happy with this, choose a breeding cage with a precut opening with a sliding door.

If you have parrotlets, choose a breeding cage tall and deep twenty-four inches. All types of bird breeding pairs need enough room. A breeding cage for lovebirds should be thirteen inches long and fourteen inches high and deep. Depending on the size of the other birds, they will require breeding cages of varying sizes. It doesn’t matter if the cage is specially designed for breeding, but its size is very important.

Also be careful with mesh spacing or sharp edges, because they could be the reason your young birds to be hurt. Make sure that the perches are solidly mounted, without wobble. Do not buy zinc coated wire cages, because they are dangerous for the babies, which usually chew on their cage wires and it could be poisonous. Be sure that your cage is from stainless steel or powder coated wire, not galvanized mesh. You can purchase breeder cages in some pet stores, but often they have to be mail ordered, so you have to pay for the delivery and to go shopping around to find the best price.

How to Take Care of Fish – 3 Great Beginner Tips

Nobody knows how to take care of fish automatically but with a few tips and pieces of advice, you’ll soon see that it is not difficult at all. In this article, I’ll tell you how to make sure you have happy, well behaved fish that live for a long time.

Tip 1 – Mixing Fish

Every species of fish is different. Some prefer to live on their own. Others are more social. Some will fight if put together – this is quite common for males but can even occur between two females.

Fish sharing an aquarium should generally be of a similar size. If you place one fish with another that is much smaller then it stands a good chance of losing a few fins and may even be eaten, even if you are feeding your fish well!

Often, it is a good idea to mix regular tropical fish with bottom feeders like catfish. As they do not compete for food (tropical fish tend to aim for the surface of the watter) then these species are usually highly compatible tank mates.

Tip 2 – Environment

Fish don’t like to be stressed. Some species are totally unsuitable if you have children, for example, as the stress can kill them.

Fish should generally be kept away from large groups of people, loud music and direct sunlight.

You should also find out what kind of water your fish like. Many people overlook the temperature of the water and also its acidity.

If you don’t regulate both of these carefully then your fish may get stressed, live a short life and fail to breed.

Tip 3 – Cleaning

Cleaning is a necessary part of keeping fish. Again, how often you clean depends on the species of fish you are keeping. Regardless, the good news is that you don’t have to move your fish out of the tank to perform cleaning.

Obviously, when the water looks murky then the water needs changing. However, some species demand more water changing than others. For example, many cichlid experts will perform a water change on a daily basis.

There is a lot of bad advice out there that recommends changing the water once per week. For most species, this is not enough. You should be looking at doing water changes between three and six times per week.

Longer haired Guinea Pigs need regular daily brushing and combing. Gently untangle any knots in the fur and take out bits of dirt or hay. Then carefully comb through your pets coat.

Check your Guinea Pigs claws regularly to see if you need to trim them yourself with nail clippers, or have the Vet do this for you. Make sure someone is holding tightly & someone else is clipping gently. This is a sure way of getting them done more easily each time this is required.

Cleaning the Cage:
Everyday just see if it needs a little tidy up, some Pigs put their wee and droppings in one corner, which is easier to clean up.

The Truth About Stopping a Dog From Biting

If you or someone you love has children, or there are children in the neighborhood, you have a duty to make sure your dog will not bite. Not only is it for the safety of your kind and yourself, but it is for the safety of your dog. If one day they decide that they are going to bite the wrong person, they’ll end up being put down, and that simply isn’t fair to your puppy. Here’s a great way to learn how to teach your dog not to bite…

To start, you have to figure out whether or not the dog is actually biting or if it is “mouthing”. Mouthing is a type of play that the dog engages in and it is how they play with their siblings and their mother. Unfortunately, they sometimes bite too hard. If they were with their mother, she would teach them that the pressure they just used was too hard for playing. Of course, their mom probably isn’t around, so it is up to you to teach this to them. If this is the problem you’re facing, simply pull your hand away when they bite it and let out a yelp and say, “Ouch!” This will show them that this is not acceptable.

If you are facing an actual biting problem, it is typically because they are defending their territory. Usually this happens when they are about to eat and are getting a little territorial with their food. If they start to snarl or nip at you when you try to give them their food, you must show them that you are the alpha dog and have the ability to take their food away. Once they get this through their heads, they will be much more reluctant to nip at you the next time.

Want a step-by-step, safe, and guaranteed way to stop your dog from biting?

Troubleshooting Dirty Aquariums

After setting up a freshwater aquarium it’s now time to simply relax and watch your mini ecosystem thrive. Right… not entirely! Once you setup freshwater aquarium begins the true challenge of maintaining it. You’ve taken time in choosing the right combination of fish, plants and other elements to make a beautiful creation. But maintaining it at a pristine condition is a constant battle so you’d better start learning the necessities. Hen you start a fresh water aquarium, the real battle is in maintaining it!

So what happens when you find your supposedly little haven of relation slowly being engulfed in dirt and algae? You fight back and regain its former glory!

Don’t worry! Setting up a freshwater aquarium is easy, so does maintaining it – that is if you know what to do. You must first uncover the reason why your aquarium is dirty. But the most common cause is dirty water. As simple as diagnosing as such, the answer is likewise simple – just get a filter. This will solve your problem regarding dirt and discoloration. The filter will sift out the impurities in the water and it will maintain its relaxing mood. The only draw back here is that you have to change the filter every 3 to 4 weeks.

Another cause of aquarium problems is algae. These little nuisances can cause your aquarium to discolor and even affect the health of the plants and the fish in your tank. The best way to battle this predicament is to employ the help of algae eaters (Plecostomus). This is the best known protector against parasites in freshwater aquariums. So always keep in mind this mighty warrior when you start a fresh water aquarium.

Also, murky water may be the result of over feeding your fish. Always provide adequate amount of food in order to keep them healthy as well as keep your aquarium looking good. Another trick is to use distilled water or bottled water if you want your aquarium to be crystal-clear. It’s a little too much especially when the cost of distilled water or bottled water is a bit pricy. But for those really serious about how their freshwater aquarium looks, then this is a small price to pay.

Cleaning your aquarium at least every two weeks can help maintain a great looking setup. Remove all decorations, transfer fish and plants, and everything in it. Make sure to scrub the glass surface with a clean sponge to get rid of any stuck to it. Once you are done, setup your freshwater aquarium as if you’re starting all over again.

Teaching a Parrot to Speak

Pet keeping is a hobby many are interested in. Yet, there are some animals such as dogs that entail much time out of a day to be walked. Then there are animals like guinea pigs that live so short that it is difficult to get tied to them. Parrots do not have any of these faults and therefore can make perfect pets.

These birds are known the world over for their fantastic colors. It is simple for someone to find one in his or her desired color. Some people could even color coordinate their living space with their bird. But, perhaps what causes most people to own such an animal is their congeniality and ability to speak.

So, how does one train a parrot in speech? If you buy a young bird that is best so they can be taught young. You will have to say words over and over to teach new words or phrases. It also helps to create a course of study for your friend to learn from.

There are many different activities one can use in order to educate a bird in the ways of human speech. Good activities should be fun and exciting not just for you but for your pet as well. If the learning sessions are interesting and enjoyable to you, the more you will do them. This means your pet will learn more quickly and most likely better as well.

There are other things you have to do for these birds that might be less fun. A healthy bird must be taken care of in order to remain that way. Therefore only feed your pet with food that parrots are able to eat. Next, you need to show care in grooming. You can give your pet a normal bath or use a special shampoo spray bottle. Lastly, remember to let your pet leave its cage. This is imperative because your bird needs the exercise and you need to clean its cage.

Easy maintenance can be done by you but someday you might need a veterinarian. Unfortunately, every Vet is not skilled in the care of these unique birds. You might have to search for a Vet that does. Therefore, do not wait until an emergency; already have one on call.

If you want fantastic pets that are easy to care for, pick parrots. They have very long lives. Be good to your friend and take care of it. That way you will be able to take pleasure in one another for a long time.

Senior Cats’ Health Issues

Senior cats will face some gradual or sudden changes in both their health as well as their behavior. All cats will age differently but there will all one thing in common as your cat ages; they will have special needs. A healthy life span in cats is considered to be 18 years, and all cats will reach the stage of special needs between the ages of 13 to 14 years old.

As an owner, there are several things you can do to watch for these needs, as well as preemptive steps to help your cat in the process. Most of the changes that your cat will face may will be from three primary sources: some type of an illness, reaction to medications, or the natural aging process. Easing the process of aging can make this transition much easier.

Senior cats overall health once they reach the magical age of 13 plus will require some special attention. As much as you would like to, there is simply no way that you can turn the clock back for your long time companion. Monitoring their overall health is the first step in this process. Taking your cat to your veterinarian at least once every six months is highly recommended, and during this process there are several things that you should make notes of.

You will want to document any type of change in your cats stamina, appetite, or their behavior. If there has been a change, it will be extremely helpful if you have some type of an idea of what triggered it. You should also have your cats eye sight as well as their hearing checked. One of the most common conditions your cat will face as they age is cataracts, glaucoma, and hearing loss. It your cat is surprised when you get close to them, this is the first signs of either of these faculties starting to go.

The next function for senior cats overall health will be in their grooming, which will be much different as they age. The first form of grooming will involve their teeth. It will be extremely important as your cat ages and crosses this threshold, to brush their teeth daily if possible. Tooth decay and gum disease is one of the most serious senior issues with your pet, and regular brushing will slow this down and possibly prevent the loss of teeth.

This will also help you to identify any changes in their mouth or tongue such as ulcerations. One thing you will notice that is very common is referred to as kitty breath. As your cats age, their natural smells will begin to change, and the smell of their food will linger much longer than it used to, which is quite normal.

However, perhaps the most important aspect of senior cats will be in their coat grooming and how you can help with this transition and their special needs. As your cat ages, they will not be able to groom themselves quite as easily as they used to. As a result of this you will need to groom their coat at least once a week, but with some special care.

Senior cats skin is not nearly as flexible or elastic as it used to be, so you will need to take extra efforts not to pull or scrape it in this process. You will want to pay special attention to the places that are getting more difficult for your cat to reach, but overall, you want to pay much closer attention for any potential skin or coat changes. These are potential signs that your cat may be developing a skin condition or some type of a medical problem.

One of the biggest challenges with senior cats is the numerous changes that will occur in their skin as they age. Vibrant coats may begin to become dry and flaky, and you may also start to see the first signs of dander. Or, the exact opposite may start to occur, where their coat is becoming very oily and greasy. These are both signs of your cats inability to properly groom themselves. To help fight these natural changes, you may need to do more frequent brushing and bathe your cat more often utilizing medicated shampoos.

Your cats skin and hair coat changing colors is part of the aging process, but it can also be the first signs of potential disease. As a result of this, you should very carefully check their skin for any bumps as well as any sign of blackheads, which can easily lead to serious infections. However, what is not normal is any type of an odor. If your cat does start to smell, get them checked as quickly as possible.

Grooming aids:

There are several new products that are specifically designed for senior cats and the grooming process. When buying a brush or comb, look for products that have tipped teeth, as they are much easier on your aging cats skin. When selecting a wire brush, look for the teeth to be set in a rubber backing with foam underneath. This is critical for your older cat, as it makes the process much more comfortable. If your cat is a long haired breed, you will need to keep the hair around their rear end clipped very short.

Senior cats will naturally start to have problems with feces matting, and this will help to prevent irritations, infections, as well as odor problems.

Most all cats do not like the trimming process, and as your cat ages, they will like it even less. In fact, it may become a real challenge. As your cat ages, their nails will become much thicker and much more brittle, which makes the task very difficult. But this is an extremely important process as they can easily become overgrown and affect your cats pads. You will need to trim small amounts at lest twice a month to prevent this overgrowth.

Some senior cats may need to be forced into remaining active. You will need to set up a daily exercise routine such as gently playing games with toys or catnip, or even walking them. If you need to use a leash, use it without hesitation or embarrassment as it will help keep their heart as well as their digestive system much healthier. If you can’t exercise them regularly, massage them. By massaging your cats joints and limbs it will help their overall circulation as well as keeping them flexible.

Keep your senior cat on a regular schedule. Cats are creatures of habit, and this is one of the most critical things you can do to keep them healthy. By keeping a regular schedule, it will also mentally stimulate them into expecting this help and bring you even closer in their golden years. Keeping their bathroom as clean as possible will also help them with a regular routine as well as minimizing any stress factors.

One of the worst things you could do to senior cats is to leave them outside alone. As your cat ages, they become much more sensitive to any type of temperature changes as their heart and lungs simply can not react like they used to. Their reflexes as well as their mental capacities are also not as sharp, which sets them up for accidents, makes them more prone to other animals, and even raises the potential for them becoming lost.

Senior cats will also need a much softer bed as they age, and if your cat has specific challenges, there are special beds that you can buy. But as they reach the golden years, the most important things you can do for your cat is to feed them properly and provide them with the most important of all nutrients; fresh and cool water.

Water is critical for aging cats and providing them with a watering tower where they always have both fresh and cool water can do wonders for your senior cat.

I am an avid lover of pets and my wife and I have had several pets throughout our years. We are especially fond of dogs, and we have a 12 year old Dalmatian (our 3rd) and a “mutt” that we rescued when someone threw him away to die in a vacant field.

He found us, nearly starved to death, and weighed about 2 pounds.

After severe bouts of mange and severe dehydration, and over 1,000.00 in veterinarian bills, we saved the little guys life, and he is one of the best, if not the best, dogs we have ever had and today is a muscular, fit, and firm 70 pound best friend.

After finishing my MBA, which at middle age was not easy, I decided to keep the research work ethics that I acquired, and devote about two hours each night in understanding the health benefits of supplementation for both humans and pets and how they might strengthen our, as well as our pets, immune system in a pre-emptive approach to health rather than a reactionary approach.

Both of my daughters are avid cat lovers, and asked me to help them with health concerns and challenges with their cats.

I am not a veterinarian nor claim to be, just a lover of pets that loves to research and pass on some knowledge that might be helpful, or at least stimulating to the thought process.

Rabbits – Not Always the Best Pets

There are a lot of preconceptions about rabbits. Some of these are due in part to the rabbit’s depiction in popular fiction. Bugs Bunny has given us the rabbit with an ability to wise-crack and outsmart his enemies. The tale of the “Tortoise and the Hare” portrays a lightning-fast rabbit who is overconfident in his skills. And the immortal Easter Bunny is a mysterious rabbit that delights in hiding eggs for us to find. Rabbits are also subject to an image that is heavily tied to their appearance. They are known for Long ears, shiny eyes, soft fur, and being the perfect size to pick up and squeeze. People expect the rabbit to behave accordingly with how it looks – to be innocent and sweet without presenting any problems. The fact is, neither stories nor looks can adequately give an accurate idea of how rabbits behave as pets.

While rabbits are not totally unmanageable as pets, they are not absolute saints either. The truth of how a rabbit will behave in your home lies somewhere in between. Some parents give a rabbit to their child as a pet thinking it will be easy to take care of. Others even think that rabbits can be left to their own devices inside their cages for long stretches of time, and have no plans to get a household ready to accommodate their new bunny. No potential rabbit owner should walk in blindly. Research and consultation should be done with professionals and rabbit owners to make sure there are no surprises. When deciding whether or not to get a rabbit as a pet, the key thing to remember is that owning a rabbit is not like owning a hamster, nor is it as complicated as owning a cat or a dog. Rabbits also have considerable cost that build up over the years for things such as food and hay. They should also be spayed or neutered and the cost for this will vary depending on the veterinarian you choose.

While getting a rabbit may seem like a good idea at first, many people have been left in frustration and even abandoned their rabbits out of disappointment. Don’t allow yourself or your rabbit to be in this position. Do your research about different rabbit breeds and the various ways rabbits behave. Find out about their eating habits and what types on environments they like. After looking at what you’ve found you may realize that your previous expectations don’t match with what a rabbit actually needs.
